Copy Is the Cheapest Lever You Have
You can't always afford a new video shoot, but you can always rewrite a headline. Ad copy is the fastest, lowest-cost way to lift performance — and most brands barely test it. Here's how to do it properly.
Start With the One Thing
Every ad should sell one idea. Before writing, finish this sentence: "This product helps [customer] achieve [outcome] without [pain]." That single line becomes the spine of your copy.
The Hook Does 80% of the Work
On Meta, the first line and the thumbnail decide whether anyone reads on. Strong hooks usually do one of these:
- Call out the audience: "Founders spending 10 hours a week on reports —"
- Lead with a result: "We cut her checkout drop-off by 34%."
- Ask a sharp question: "Still writing product descriptions by hand?"
- Break a belief: "More ad spend won't fix a leaky funnel."
Speak Benefits, Prove With Features
Don't say "made with 100% cotton." Say "stays cool all day — because it's 100% breathable cotton." Benefit first, feature as proof.
Add Specifics and Social Proof
Numbers beat adjectives. "Loved by 12,000 customers" and "ships in 48 hours" outperform "premium quality" and "fast shipping" every time. Drop in a real review line where it fits.
Match the Copy to the Funnel Stage
- Cold: lead with the problem and the hook, not the discount
- Warm: highlight differentiation and proof
- Retargeting: handle the objection — shipping, returns, price — and add urgency
One Clear Call to Action
Tell people exactly what happens next: "Shop the collection," "Get 20% off today," "Book a free audit." One CTA, not three.
How to Actually Optimize
Writing is step one. Optimization is where the gains are:
1. Test hooks, not whole ads. Keep the creative fixed and rotate 3–5 first lines. 2. Change one variable at a time so you know what moved the needle. 3. Judge on the right metric — cost per purchase and ROAS, not likes. 4. Give it enough spend and time to reach significance before you call a winner. 5. Roll winners into the next round and kill the losers fast.
