Why Brands Move to Shopify

Teams replatform to Shopify to escape hosting headaches, slow load times, plugin conflicts and security patches. The one real fear is losing hard-won Google rankings in the move. Done right, a migration keeps your SEO intact — and often improves it, because Shopify is faster and cleaner. Here is how we handle a Shopify migration.

Step 1: Audit Before You Touch Anything

  • Export your full URL list and crawl the current site
  • Note your top-ranking pages and their keywords in Google Search Console
  • List every product, collection, blog post and page
  • Record your current traffic as a baseline

Step 2: Migrate Content and Data Cleanly

Move products, variants, images, customers, orders and blog content to Shopify. Keep product handles sensible and recreate your collection structure. This is where most DIY migrations go wrong — messy data means messy SEO.

Step 3: Map and Redirect Every URL (the Critical Step)

Your old URLs and Shopify's URLs will differ (Shopify uses /products/ and /collections/). For every old URL, create a 301 redirect to the matching new URL. This passes ranking signals and stops visitors hitting 404s. Miss this and you lose rankings overnight.

Step 4: Preserve On-Page SEO

  • Recreate meta titles and descriptions
  • Keep H1s and body content for ranking pages
  • Re-add structured data (Product, Breadcrumb, FAQ)
  • Rebuild internal links

Step 5: Launch and Verify

  • Submit a new sitemap in Google Search Console
  • Test a sample of redirects
  • Watch crawl stats and coverage for errors
  • Keep an eye on rankings and fix any drops quickly

What Not to Do

  • Don't launch without redirects
  • Don't change URLs again right after migrating
  • Don't block the new site from indexing and forget to unblock it
  • Don't delete the old store until the new one is stable and indexed
