Why COD Still Matters in India

Despite UPI's rise, Cash on Delivery remains huge in India — for many D2C stores it is 40-60% of orders, especially in tier 2 and 3 cities where trust and card penetration vary. Offering COD can lift conversion significantly. The catch is managing RTO (return to origin). Here is how to do COD right on Shopify.

Step 1: Turn On COD

In Shopify, COD is a manual payment method you enable under Settings. For most Indian stores, though, a dedicated COD app gives you far more control — OTP verification, serviceability checks and fraud filtering.

Step 2: Add OTP Verification

Fake and impulsive COD orders inflate RTO. An OTP step at checkout confirms the phone number is real and the buyer actually intends to order — one of the single biggest RTO reducers.

Step 3: Control Where COD Is Offered

  • Restrict COD to serviceable pincodes
  • Set a minimum and maximum order value for COD
  • Hide COD for high-RTO products or regions if needed

Step 4: Reduce RTO

RTO eats margins through two-way shipping and lost stock. Reduce it with:

  • OTP verification and address confirmation
  • A small COD fee to filter low-intent orders
  • Partial COD (collect a small advance online)
  • Clear delivery timelines and proactive WhatsApp updates
  • An NDR workflow to re-attempt failed deliveries

Step 5: Consider Partial COD and Prepaid Nudges

Offer a discount or free shipping for prepaid orders to shift some COD buyers to UPI. Even a 5-10% prepaid shift meaningfully improves cash flow and cuts RTO.

Tools That Help

Apps like GoKwik, Shipway and others handle COD verification, RTO prediction and prepaid conversion. We integrate and tune these as part of a Shopify build, or via a custom app when you need bespoke logic.
