The Deadlines You Can't Ignore

Shopify Scripts are being deprecated, and the dates are firm:

  • April 15, 2026 — you can no longer edit or publish Shopify Scripts. Existing Scripts keep running, but you cannot change or create them.
  • June 30, 2026 — all Shopify Scripts stop executing entirely.
If your store still relies on Scripts for discounts, shipping or payment logic, you need a migration plan now. After June 30, any logic that lives in Scripts simply stops working.

What Are Shopify Scripts (and Why They're Going)

Scripts were Ruby snippets that ran on Shopify Plus checkouts to customise discounts, shipping and payment options. They predate Shopify's modern, upgrade-safe developer platform and only worked with the old checkout.liquid checkout, which is also being retired. Shopify is consolidating all custom logic onto one modern surface: Shopify Functions.

What Replaces Scripts: Shopify Functions

Shopify Functions let you write custom backend logic that runs on Shopify's infrastructure — fast, versioned and upgrade-safe. Unlike Scripts, Functions work with the new Checkout Extensibility, are built with the Shopify CLI, and are deployed like any modern app extension.

Mapping Your Scripts to Functions

  • Discount Scripts move to the Discount Function API (product, order and shipping discounts)
  • Shipping/delivery Scripts move to delivery customisation Functions
  • Payment Scripts move to payment customisation Functions

How to Migrate

1. Audit every active Script and document exactly what each one does 2. Rebuild that logic as Shopify Functions using the Shopify CLI 3. Test thoroughly on a development store across edge cases 4. Deploy the Functions and confirm the behaviour matches 5. Remove the old Scripts once Functions are live

Functions require development work — they are code, not a settings toggle — so budget time or bring in a developer.
